Domestic travel insurance Australia

Even though you're covered by Medicare or your private health insurer for medical expenses in Australia, a domestic travel insurance policy can provide cover for a wide variety of different situations.

Australia is a large and diverse country with a wide range of sights and experiences to offer. Whether you plan to travel to see the Blue Mountains, get a taste of Tasmania or dive at the Great Barrier Reef in far-north Queensland, you should make sure you have domestic travel insurance to provide protection for you and your family during your holiday.

Does travel insurance cover medical expenses in Australia?

Insurance does NOT cover any medical expenses when you are travelling within Australia. When you are in Australia, any medical costs would need to be covered by Medicare, your private health insurance or out of your own pocket.

It is actually legislated by the Australian Government that travel insurance companies are unable to provide cover for medical expenses within Australia for Australian residents and citizens, who are eligible for Australian Medicare. The intention is for any medical costs to remain under Medicare or Private Health.

Please note that ambulance services are state run services and Medicare does not necessarily cover you for ambulance trips.

Whilst a domestic travel insurance policy does not provide cover for medical expenses, it can provide cover for Cancellation due to a medical situation.

Domestic Medical Expense Example

If a family had bought a Domestic Plus policy to cover a family holiday to the Gold Coast during the September school holidays with activities including theme parks, going to the beach and hiking. And two days before the family was due to depart on a flight from Sydney to the Gold Coast, one of the children broke his leg whilst riding a skateboard that required surgery to reset the leg that meant they needed to cancel the holiday.

In this instance, the costs of the surgery would be covered by Medicare and their private health insurance policy and not their domestic policy.

However, the cost for any flight, hotel or theme park tickets that cannot be refunded may be claimed, as a result of the medical incident.

But don’t think that travelling domestically that you’ll always be covered for every eventuality. There are plenty of other non-medical situations that can affect your holiday.

Islands NOT Covered by a Domestic policy

There are a number of places that are in the Pacific but NOT covered by a Domestic policy.

For the below destinations, you would need to buy a Pacific region policy.

  • Pitcairn Island
  • Henderson Island
  • Ducie Island
  • Oeno Island

For the below locations, which can be considered Australian Territories, select a Worldwide region policy.

Within Australia’s maritime borders, there are 8,222 islands, some of these are off the coast of the Australian mainland like Norfolk Island or Tasmania such as Bruny Island or within the rivers and harbours like Fort Denison in Sydney Harbour.

If you are travelling by land (car, bus, rail etc) or air (flying) to these states or islands, select a ‘Domestic Region’ policy. If you are travelling to any of these locations by sea on a cruise, you will need to select cruise travel insurance to ensure you have appropriate cover.

Is Norfolk Island covered under an Australian domestic policy?

Norfolk Island changed to being a domestic territory of Australia on the 1st July 2016, so purchasing a domestic policy will provide the cover if you are flying. If you are travelling to Norfolk Island by boat, you will need to purchase a cruise policy.

Cruise Liner

Do you need travel insurance for cruises in Australian waters?

Cruises are increasingly popular among Australians of all ages. Many choose international destinations, but there are also many great cruise options closer to home around Australia and the Pacific Islands.

A lot of travellers don't realise this, but even if your cruise remains in domestic waters, your private health insurance and Medicare are unlikely to provide medical cover as soon as you board the ship.

Medicare will only cover you if the doctor onboard is registered with Medicare. In the majority of cases, this is unlikely to be the case, so if you became sick or injured whilst cruising, you may find yourself out of pocket for the full cost of medical treatment.

Being out at sea also means that if you needed urgent medical treatment for a broken bone or a serious illness, you would have to be evacuated from the ship by helicopter or boat to the nearest land hospital, costing upwards of $20,000 AUD.

A medical evacuation can be very expensive and would also be at your own expense unless you’re covered by travel insurance with medical evacuation cover included.

For these reasons, cruise companies recommend cruise travel insurance for all travellers, regardless of where your cruise is going or whether or not it’s leaving Australian waters.

Aeroplane

Does travel insurance cover domestic flights?

  • Travel Delays where you can claim $200 per day should you be delayed by more than 6 hours

  • Special Events Transport cover to cover the reasonable costs of additional transport to make it to scheduled event such as wedding, funeral, sporting event or concert.

Travel insurance is not mandatory, so you do not necessarily need it and you can fly without travel insurance domestically. 1. Pack for your specific trip

Australia is a vast country of varying climates, so pack for the environment. This could mean sunscreen, plenty of water, warm clothing or taking an emergency beacon.

  2. Wear Sunscreen
The sun in Australia can be unrelenting, apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you go out in the sun and reapply every couple of hours throughout the day.

  3. Only swim at patrolled beaches
The ocean can be very dangerous and unpredictable, always swim between the red and yellow flags as this is the safest place and so you can get help if you get into trouble.

  4. Prepare for the outback
Know that you can be on your own if something goes wrong, there’s no phone reception in the outback. Take more than enough water, food and fuel for your trip. Let someone know when you expect to arrive.

  5. Bushfire season
If you see smoke or a bushfire, act quickly as fires can move very quickly. Tune into local radio and obey instructions immediately to evacuate areas.

  6. Stop revive survive
Driving anywhere in Australia can often mean covering vast distances which you may not be used to. Take a regular breaks every two hours and share the driving if possible.

  7. Register your trip
If you plan on going anywhere remote whether that be driving or hiking, tell friends and family where you are going and when you are expected to return. If a register is available at the beginning of a hike, complete your trip details.

  8. Keep your luggage and belongings in sight and reach at all times
Whilst crime is relatively low in Australia, petty crime does exist and opportunistic thieves are around, so don’t leave anything unattended. This is particularly apparent at the beach whilst you are swimming, so leave your stuff with a friend or ask your friend to mind your stuff for you.

  9. Prepare for hiking or going into the bush or wilderness
Wear appropriate hiking shoes to protect you from spiders and snakes, wear sunscreen, take a hat, insect repellent, plenty of water and matches to start a fire.

  10. Print and save electronic copies of your travel insurance policy with you
If the unexpected happens, you want to have the contact details and your policy details of your travel insurance handy so you can contact them for assistance.
